To gain the licence you will need a minimum of just 25 hours in your pilots log book. Although you don’t need a licenced airfield from which to fly microlights, here you are safe in the knowledge that you are training at an accredited airfield, fully licenced by the Civil Aviation Authority with 23 years of experience. We operate the Ikarus C42 aircraft – a three axis microlight with great handling and which above all is brilliant fun to fly. Have a look here for our prices.
This is a great way to start your flying career. Once you have your licence you will have the option to convert your licence in to a full National Private Pilots Licence which will enable you to fly larger aircraft.

The course: Partial and full panel instrument flying covering straight and level flying, turns on to specific headings, climbing and descending and recovery from unusual attitudes. You will also use one or more radio navigation aids to maintain a given track for a given period of time. Let down and approach procedures will be covered including approaches to a decision height and the appropriate go around and missed approach procedures. Bad weather circuits will also be covered under simulated bad weather conditions.
The cost: At Compton we charge an extremely competitive £184 per hour and lessons are done on a pay as you go basis. We also do training in your own aircraft at £50 per hour. To keep costs low for you, you will pay separately for any practice approaches on the day under the guidance of your instructor. ILS/DME and NDB/DME approaches can be done at Bournemouth at a cost of £34.00 in our PA-28’s. Yeovil (Westland) can do NDB/DME approaches from £10 on weekdays. We have a range of instructors and examiners we can call upon all of whom can be contacted through Compton operations. One ground exam needs to be sat with us with a pass mark of 72% and cost of £30. Both the Trevor Thom study guide and IMC Confuser are available in our Pooleys shop on site, as soon as you become a member you are entitled to a discount on Pooley’s equipment – just ask us in ops for the discount code.
The UK IMC Rating will give you greater confidence in the air, increase your skills as a pilot, and give you a solid grounding in instrument flying. Although the IMC rating may cease to exist in April 2012 – those who achieve their rating before this time will be entitled to grandfather rights. Your experience will never expire. Please contact us if you require any further information by phone or email, or have a look on our website. Or ideally arrange to pop up and see us to chat with an instructor and have a look around.

How it works…The course, if you choose the pre payment option, entitles you to 8 hours flight training in the air and added time on the ground with your instructor. You are also given a Pilots Log Book in which to officially record your hours, and an Air Pilots Manual Volume One which will help you with all your ground study. If you choose to do more hours, or continue on to do a full pilots course, you can pay as you go or pay for further hours in advance. The hours when purchased will be valid for 12 months.
What is covered…After a minimum of 8 hours in the air with a qualified and highly experienced flying instructor you will have acquired skills in the following areas;
- The effects of the aircraft controls
- Approaching an airfield and landing the aircraft
You will also have time on the ground with your instructor covering a selection of subjects that will consolidate your knowledge and aid you in the air;
- How to read the aeronautical maps & navigate in the air including airfield joining
- How to use the radio for general and emergency procedures
- Effects of controls and how the aircraft systems work
The overall aim, regardless of your reasons for wanting to complete the course, is to make you a safe and helpful passenger and co-pilot. The above is a guide but we are more than happy to chat about any other areas you feel you would like to cover.
Advantages of doing the course at Compton…Having a grass runway as opposed to tarmac, you will gain invaluable experience at landing on the most common landing surface in England. This will provide you with a high skill level should you need to land an aircraft in an emergency in the unlikely event your pilot becomes incapacitated. We are a commercial activity free zone which means you have a relaxed environment in which to train, and don’t have the hindrance of being second place to large aircraft. There are no prolonged waiting times at the hold and all your training can be done directly above the field meaning you get the most from both your time and money.
Please give us a ring with any questions you may have – or even better pop up for a cup of tea. Prices can be found on our website or ask for a price list from the main desk via the contact details below. You could always purchase a one off trial flight as a ‘taster’ if you are unsure to start with. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Compton is the ideal airfield from which to fly the vintage Tiger Moth having been 'born' in the early sixties when a farmer brought a Tiger Moth to fly from his beautiful hilltop spot in Dorset.
