Solo Hire/Self Fly at Compton
Enjoy flying from one of the most beautiful airfields in the country, with a fantastic restaurant and outside area making it an ideal place to share your flying with friends and family. Free and uncontrolled airspace surrounds us and we don't charge for landings.
You can hire aircraft for an hour or up to week 360 days of the year. We do regular fly outs (see pic!) and encourage you to meet fellow solo hirers and share costs, experience and enthusiasm.
Compton Abbas does not charge any expensive and additional membership fees for our Frequent Flyer Discount rates. You pay the normal reasonable membership and just have to fly for one hour per month to qualify! To arrange a check out or book a check out flight with us please see the contact page. FAQ's and Terms & Conditions
Just ring or email to book a slot - we usually recommend a weeks notice but will sometimes have space if you call on the day. Once you are a member you take priority and we do our best to fit you in.
If you fly for one hour, once a month, then you will be entitled to a '28' day discount. This keeps your flying at a reasonable cost and is an incentive for you to keep up the hours required for your licence to be maintained. If you would like to do hour building then chat to us about our hour building packages that we can tailor make for you according to the amount of hours you need.
Have a look on the 'Useful Links' section on our website for information on what you need to do to keep your licence current. You are always more than welcome to come and chat to us with any questions.
Time slots are usually kept to 1.5 hours for a 1 hour flight. If you would like to land away for a couple of hours, take the aircraft away for a day or even a week, then just make sure you book in advance and chat to us about our 'minimum hire' rates. We work hard to keep everything to time so that you are able to plan your day - and we don't suffer from delays due to commercial traffic.
Flying buddies & Cost share: If you would like to fly with someone else to save money, or just meet other pilots and fly to new places with new people then let us know and we'll try and put you in touch with other people in a similar situation. Or come up to our regular club events and meet people there. If you have a certain date and time that you would like to fly then you are always welcome to pop us an email in ops (fly@abbasair.com) - we will then send it out to our members database and put you in touch with whoever responds.
Looking for inspiration? We encourage all our pilots to do a mini 'review' of the airfields they visit and then compile a book of ideas for you to help keep your flying interesting and varied.
Fancy something different? If you need to add a bit of spice to your flying - then why not take advantage of some of our other offers? We do advanced training for confidence building and to improve your skill level post PPL, conversion courses on to microlights or GA aircraft and tailwheel training in our pristine Tiger Moth.
Taking a passenger: If you would like to take a passenger on a flight they will need to fill out a form and pay a small fee for temporary membership of the club that day. If they fly with you regularly it may be more cost effective for them to become a social member. That way they don't have to fill out a form each time they fly - and they can fly an unlimited amount of times with you.
Technical Logs: You must fill out the aircraft tech log before you fly for insurance reasons. Ops staff are here to guide you.
Membership Cards: You will not be able to fly without your membership card. Once you become a member all your details (such as the expiry date of your medical) will be stored on this card – making sure each flight is legal for both you and us – and giving you an extra pair of eyes to keep track of your ratings, medicals and licences.
