Sky Demon Club Night
Thursday 9th November 2017 at 7.30 pm

There’s an app that’s taken the aviation world by storm, but do you really know how to use it? Sky Demon is a custom-built vector chart that allows you to easily plan routes but simply clicking on waypoints. Warnings about danger areas and temporary airspace help you to plan your route and up-to-date TAFs and METARs allow you to adjust your journey for the weather.

“While flying, SkyDemon will present you with a moving map of unparalleled clarity, with a wealth of extra information available at a touch of the screen. Load a route you have planned earlier or plan one on the fly by simply touching the map. Virtual Radar draws your path ahead with stunning clarity, making it obvious what sort of airspace, obstructions, NOTAM and terrain are ahead and how they relate to your trajectory.”

So put 9th November in your diary, come up to Compton and learn everything there is know about the wonders of Sky Demon. Bring your phone/tablet along so that you can practice as you watch, ask all of those questions you’ve been thinking of and discover the pro’s and con’s of the technology.

If you would like to find out about more of our members events then visit our website – To keep up-to-date with everything happening at the airfield follow us on twitter @abbasair or like our Facebook page.

Christmas Fly In & Fair
Saturday 3rd December 2016 - Saturday 3rd December 2016

The venue for this years Festive Christmas Craft Fair will be Hangar 1 with the beautiful de Havilland aircraft decorated in fairy lights providing the magical back drop. Entry is free and the fair will open at 1100 and finish at 1500 although the restaurant will be open from 0930 until 1630. We suggest booking a table!

Our Christmas Fly In this year will see some local independent traders selling their Christmas goodies in our craft fair. We will have a range of festive goodies on the menu too; mulled wine on tap, lovely handmade treats from our local cake supplier, cinnamon coffees, and a lot more.

We would love to see our members and our flying visitors partake in the spirit of the event. If you arrive as Father Christmas, an Angel, Elf or even better a Christmas Pudding we will in return provide you with a free landing fee. For those of you who come up on the day, whether student, solo hire or aircraft owner, there will be a prize for the best Christmas fancy dress. Compton Ops will be sure to be worse dressed with the fancy dress box already out the loft.

We have some very different stalls this year, one of which is Chap Clothing. Always immersed in country activities and with an existing passion for design, quality & craftsmanship you couldn’t go wrong with a Christmas purchase from local owner Harry’s stall.

Jewellery is a must at Christmas and this year we are hoping to be joined by Helen Beardon-Hambleton who takes 100 year old silver cutlery and turns it into something really special. With the ornate engraving at the ends of the cutlery handles she is able to make the most amazing and unique items of jewellery.

We will also be welcoming another new stall holder to this years fair and that is Aviation Artworker, Steve Walker. He records a persons flying careers onto rustic timber in the shape of a tail plane. His work would be a gift that would capture a persons flying history that could be kept and admired for prosperity and pride.

Nick Rose, childrens author of the aviation books Myro’s Adventures, will be here not only signing copies of his books for our younger aviation enthusiasts but also presenting the prize from our writing completion we are holding. We are looking forward to meeting the children who have won an Authors Visit to their school and also reading all about the adventures our Harvey Harvard has had in their creative minds.

There are lots more in addition to these to give you a great opportunity to purchase some unusual gifts whether an aviation fan or not! We look forward to seeing you there.

Piston Head Fly Out
Thursday 6th October 2016

Do any of our members want to join me for a fun fly-out to Exeter then onto Raceworld for a bit of competitive Go Cart Racing? It's all booked for Thursday 6th of October. Registration at Raceworld will be at 11am so it will be an 0830 meet at Compton.

You are welcome to hire club aircraft and buddy up - and if those with their own aircraft have a spare seat to offer I am sure I will be able to fill it. Students are also welcome to fly with an instructor.

It is October so we are nearing the poorer weather, however if we cannot get there by air then we can pool a few cars, have breakfast on the way and enjoy the racing anyway. The Super Prix is £40, plus landing fees at Exeter and a taxi ride, but I will look at that part more closely depending on numbers.

Not one of my cheaper days out but its going to be a lot of fun. Please let me know if you fancy coming along.

Sandown lobster Run
Friday 2nd September 2016

Its our annual lobster fun run! A great afternoon and evening out, the plan is to fly to the Isle of Wight for a walk down to the beach, picking up some freshly caught lobster on the way back, and returning back to base to cook our catches and enjoy a cold drink on the terrace. First come first served so email with your request if you wish to join us!

The club aircraft are booked from 1300-1700 so if you would like to buddy up and solo hire, or fly with an instructor, then just get in touch. If you have your own aircraft based here you are also very welcome to come along.

Wine Tasting
Thursday 11th August 2016 at 7.00 pm

After our successful Flying Fish & Chip Night with our lovely members and their families we were left feeling enthused that we really shouldn't leave it too long until our next club get together.

So on the evening of the Thursday 11th of August at 19.00, 17 of our Compton Abbas Airfield Members are meeting at Portesham Vineyard for a Wine Tasting evening.

Portesham Vineyard is an artisan vineyard established in 2004 on the gentle south facing slopes of the Dorset Downs, benefiting from high light levels found only on coastal vineyard sites, the Jurassic Coast being just over 2 miles away.

The evening will begin at 19.00 with a chat about the wine making and a tour of the vineyard, then the best bit, the tasting. We will enjoy a sparkling wine and 3 stills with of course the option of purchasing another glass or two.

This has proven to be a popular event and the uptake for places was instant, therefore if you would still like to go please let me know as we will be organising more.

Lands End Fly Out
Monday 4th July 2016

On the 4th July Compton's 'Flying Buddies' are taking the club aircraft to Lands End for a spot of evening flying. The plan is to land in Cornwall at around 1700, have a light snack and soft drink (!), and then head back home to land by 1900 with what should be a beautiful flight over the west country. Please email Michelle if you would like to go along as a student or as a solo hirer.

If any private aircraft owners would like to join the group then please get in touch with Michelle too. We will be doing a group PPR so we will need details on the 3rd July from you - please keep your eyes peeled for emails!

Flying Fish & Chip Night

You will also be able to fly until sunset in your own aircraft and we do have some spaces for solo and instructional slots too (fuel will close at 2030).

The bar will be open until 2100 for drinks, cakes and ice creams and you are welcome to camp over in the grass overflow car park if you wish (please note that there are no toilets or washing facilities so its back to nature!). Friends and family are all welcome too.

We will have music on the terrace and possibily a marquee so the event will go ahead come rain or shine. The airfield will close by 2200 so all those not staying over will need to have left the car park by that time so we can lock up safely.

Friday 22nd April 2016

Flying in the Falklands

A vast career in Aviation, with tales of over 50 SHAR missions, both ground attack and Combat Air Patrol during the Falklands conflict I know will lend itself to another great evening at Compton.

Please email michelle@abbasair if you would like to come along.

This evening is free to members with a £5 charge to non-members

A Historic Flight Evening
Thursday 7th January 2016

On Thursday 7th of January, a familiar face to Compton Si Wilson will be hosting the evening. Some of you may have been lucky enough to have been at Compton when he has flown the Fairey Swordfish through. The evening will be based on his time on RN Historic Flight and sharing his varied flying CV with you, to give you a little idea of the content of the evening there is a brief summary about Si below.

Lieutenant Simon Wilson was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland in 1980. He first flew in small aircraft with his father, who was a Flying Instructor, at the age of six. Hooked on flying, he took every opportunity to fly with whoever he could convince to let him in the cockpit, going solo on his 17th birthday. He went on to complete his PPL within the following few months.

Simon joined the Royal Navy as a pilot in 2002, completing the flying training requirements of flying grading, JEFTS and DHFS, before joining the maritime Lynx community. He was one of the last pilots to complete the final ab initio Lynx Mk3 course, gaining his wings in 2005, and converted to the Lynx Mk8 DSP a short time later. Following on, he joined HMS SUTHERLAND Flight for Operation TELIC in 2006.

He subsequently served on HMS MONTROSE as the flight pilot, deployed in the Mediterranean, and participated in Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR during 2007. Once back in the UK, he joined the newly-formed 815 Naval Air Squadron B Section, based at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton. Since joining B Section, Simon has been flying Lynx on a range of demanding tasking and converted to the upgraded Lynx Mk8 SRU. In 2009 he was appointed B Section Operations Officer and Instrument Rating Instructor. Following a Qualified Helicopter Instructor (QHI) Course at RAF Shawbury, he returned to 702 NAS, again at RNAS Yeovilton, as a QHI teaching ab-initio and ‘refresher’ courses for pilots to fly the Lynx.

In his spare time Simon enjoys flying a wide range of aircraft. He has flown everything from weight shift microlights, through many different general aviation aeroplanes, to vintage aircraft. He has his own aircraft and has been restoring it to an airworthy condition over the last few years. Simon has accumulated flight time in over 65 different aircraft types to date, of which 18 are taildraggers.

Having asked Si if he would host an evening at Compton he was delighted to be asked and because of that we have decided to add a ticket price of £10.00 as a donation to Historic Flight, in the hope we will be able to make a small contribution to Historic Flight and keep Si and the Swordfish in the skies.

Drinks only, no food, but beer will be £2.00 a pint and your ticket will include tea & coffee during the interval.

Bar will open at 19.00 with a 19.30 start.  If you would like to come along the £10.00 will be payable on the night. I will however need to know you are coming so if you could please email me I can reserve you a space.

Notes from a Wing Walker

Club Evening with Helen Tempest - a lady with a story to tell. At 15 she became the youngest wing-walker flying on her father's Barnstormers Tiger Moth. By 21 she had joined Vic Norman's AeroSuperBatics wing-walking team and by 2011 she was managing O'Brian's Flying Circus.

With the date to be confirmed Helen will be raising money for fly2help on the evening through our ticket sales (£10). An amazing lady, this is sure to be a really interesting evening, and Bodmin having already had a talk from her have confirmed this!

Who fancies a morning on the front line?
May 2014 at 7.45 am

815 Naval Air Squadron have invited 12 of Compton`s Members to join them to see what goes on behind the scenes.  It will be an early start as you will join them for their morning `Shareholders` as they talk through the squadrons operations for the day.  You will then go through some ground training and take part in a Practical Navigation Brief with a break for coffee you will then execute this brief in the chart room.  The morning will end with a walk round the hangar and a visit to the Lynx Simulator.

Time and date to be confirmed late next week and then the invite for anyone who wants to take up this generous invite can let us know.

GASCO Safety Evening
Thursday 20th March 2014 at 6.30 pm

The General Aviation Safety Council will be visiting Compton at 1900 for a talk by the regional safety officers. Always a popular evening they do a great presentation on behalf of the CAA covering a wide range of subjects designed to help you be the safest pilot you can be - and making you privy to some interesting facts and figures. You'll get your log book stamped too!

The new bar will be open for drinks only (no food for this one i'm afraid!) but we do need an idea of numbers so please email in if you'd like to come. Looking forward to seeing lots of you there!

Royal Navy Historic Flight Centre Trip
Wednesday 19th February 2014 at 7.00 pm

On the evening of Wednesday 19th February those lucky members who have rsvp'd in time will get a guided tour round the hangar as well as a presentation by the Commanding Officer about the Royal Navy Historic Flight.

The whole experience will be about  90 minutes and they will be able to accept 25 of you there. If its popular (which we think it will be!) we might be able to do another date for you.

You'll have a chance to get up close and personal with the aircraft and to be able to ask some of the pilots questions. Thank you very much to Simon Wilson for organising this for us - he's been a great supporter of Compton recently having brought up some beautiful aircraft including the Percival Proctor to feature in the Compton Calendar 2014.

RSVP to!
